Surrounded by the love of his family and with incredibly heavy hearts we bid farewell to Dad/Opa as he left his earthly home to enter his eternal home on Sunday January 01, 2023 at The Pembroke Regional Hospital in his 90th year.

Don was born and raised in Alice Township and then moved to Pembroke, Ontario.
Don loved being a father and being involved in family gatherings. Loved, cherished, and proud father of Laurie Gagne (Andrew) Pembroke, Paula Wilson (Kevin) Cobden, and Craig Hammel (Kelly)Alice Township. Adoring Opa to six beautiful grandchildren: Kelsie Gagne (Clayton), Zachary Gagne (Tori), Allyson Gagne (Thomas), Cody Wilson (Abbie), Cierra Wagner (Jeff),and Nolan Hammel (Megan).

Don is the son of the late William and Florence Hammel. Don will be missed by his two sisters Heather Hupp (late Howard) Kitchener, and Darlene Melcher (Ken) Pembroke. Special uncle to Cathy Herzog (Peter), Darren Hupp (Yvonne), Wendy Briscoe, and Megan Melcher. Loving great-uncle to Kendall, Logan, Kayla, Corbin, Kendra and Kenson, and great-great uncle to Roslyn.

Special thank you to Kandis and Robyn from the Geriatric Care Team, Cheryl from the Unit Support Team Program and Spiritual Guidance from Pastor Bruce Thompson. All were a constant support to Dad and the family.
Don is the former spouse of the late Ruth Pitt.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Don with his family during a visitation at the Murphy Funeral Home 296 Isabella Street, Pembroke on Thursday January 05, 2023 from 6 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday January 06, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, 503 Alfred Street, Pembroke. Spring Interment at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Alice.
