Obituary for Harry John Hawkins

Print
Our beloved Harry John Hawkins, age 62 yr of Farndale Farms, Pembroke, gracefully passed away at home on August 10, 2018. Harry, son of the late Gordon Hawkins and Iverna (Wright) was born and raised in Pembroke on the family farm with his siblings, David Hawkins and Nancy (Raglin), Dugan Hawkins and Colleen (Buckley) and Laurie Bowman (Kevin). In 1983 he married the love of his life, Francesca vz Muhlen and bought the farm. Harry liked to joke that he never left home, only moved down the hall. Their union produced four wonderful children; Tristan Hawkins with wife Amanda (Rollins) and baby Sophie, Vanessa Hawkins and friend Marcus Agnelli, Donovan Hawkins with spouse Laura Welsh and little Leo and William with partner Amanda Lamarche.
Harry was a dairy farmer until 2001 and also had a herd of beef cattle. In 2007 he sold the last of his beef herd and started cash cropping, but always said tongue in cheek, that you should leave the word "cash" out of it. He loved working in the bush and enjoyed his lumber business selling wholesale lumber. He had many interests including woodworking, traveling, fishing, hunting and many have marveled at his 8000 gladiolas along the front of the farm on highway 41.
Harry was a giant in stature (it was hard to find size 15 boots) and personality. Always quick witted, he would often tease with a ready joke or fun jab with a big smile. He simply enjoyed people and took great interest in everybody's stories and visits. Always working, creating, beginning new projects, the man never sat still and had so much pleasure in life.
A catastrophic fall in January 2018 left Harry a quadriplegic and was the beginning of a 6 ½ month journey of immense physical and mental pain which he bore with grace. A pulmonary embolism granted him his wish to be released from his body.
He was so loved and will be so missed by his family and all that knew him. Besides his eternally loving wife Francesca (whom he called Francie, Ike, Mother Superior among other pet names),and his immediate family mentioned, Harry leaves his beloved nieces and nephews (Robbie, Natalie, Jamie Hawkins, Frederic, Nicholas, Alexandra, Victoria Laliberte, Emily, Morgan, Alexanna Hawkins, Hayden and Harrison Bowman. Dear brother in law to Marina (vz Muhlen) and Dr. Serge Laliberte and Gloria vz Muhlen and father in law, Nicholas vz Muhlen and mother-in-law the late Isaly (Bila) vz Muhlen.

Harry's Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday August 19, 2018 at Westwinds restaurant, Best Western, Pembroke between 2-4pm. Harry's wish was "be happy for me", so bring a smile and an anecdote about this man that had a life well lived.
